I'd be interested to hear your opinion on possible effects of the Nintendo Wii and associated wireless console controllers on users (particularly children). Couldn't access your games console file from the appliances download page. It seems that all our friends and relatives have dashed out to buy one, and seem most perturbed that we don't want our small children near them! I understand from other sites that the wireless controller communicates with the console via bluetooth over a 10m radius. Is bluetooth as big a concern as EMR from mobile phones and WiFi? |

Apologies for not answering long before this. We have not measured a Wii, but will do shortly and report back here. From our experience of other Bluetooth devices, they are probably not a great problem provided they are unplugged from the mains when not in use as we believe they otherwise keep transmitting.
Used sensibly (and turned off when not in use) they are likely to be much less of a problem than standard DECT cordless phones and certainly than the BT HomeHub Broadband WiFi and DECT combined which irradiate homes with high pulsing microwave energy 24-7. EMR from phones is probably worse (it is higher) but DECT and broadband are 24-7 - like have a low-powered mobile phone base station inside your home.
It is difficult to keep a reasonable balance. The fun that children can get from such things, and their peer pressure, may more than compensate for relative short exposure periods. That needs to be balanced with some activities that demand longer-term more relaxed concentration (away from energy radiating devices!). There is increasing (mostly anecdotal at present, but some peer-reviewed relevant studies) evidence that some of the ADHD, short-term concentration and behavioural problems in children and young people are certainly aggravated, and maybe caused, by over-stimulation at a young age. It is likely that such repeated activity epigenetically turns on a number of genes that control hormone and neurotransmitter levels in the body.
