hi folks
I have a new laptop and the only way I can see how to connect an earth without buying the specialist USB earthing option you have is to use the serial port. It is a small serial port without screw connections but the surround of the port is metal. if I use a serail connector that fits and simply use the internal metal filament of the cable to connect to an earth pin, should it suffice? Thanks,

Not necessarily. Sometimes the screen is not connected and sometimes commercial serial cables do not even have a screen these days!

The 9-pin serial connector does not have a pin for "protective ground", just pin 5 as "signal ground" which is not necessarily connected to the case - it depends on the serial electronics inside. The protective ground on the 9-pin serial connector is on the outer metal plug casing. You could buy a empty metal serial plug and connect the earth wire to that - or a medium-large crocodile clip that has wide enough jaws to grip on the edges of the computer connector. Some serial leads will work fine as you suggest, but you would need to check the screen connection to the plug shell/casing.
