This is a mobile phone system based modem. It will almost certainly be the same power as a mobile phone (e.g. 1 watt RF power), though we have been unable to find this in the manufacturer's specifications. It probably has adaptive power control and will turn its power down when near a good base station connection with a strong signal.

However GPRS and HSDPA do use quite a lot of power, especially when transmitting data and so it will be similar to sitting near a mobile phone all the time the unit is powered. You could plug it in to the end of a 5 metre USB extension cable and then mount the modem unit in a window (preferably facing in the direction of a local mast for the operator you are going to have the data contract with). That would significantly reduce your exposure.

Is sitting near to an operating mobile phone for long period hazardous? Well, one of the latest news stories we have run suggests a significant increased likelihood of your developing dementia as you get older. See:
www.powerwatch.org.uk/news/20081113_blood_brain_barrier.asp

We would recommend a normal ADSL or cable broadband connection. We would also expect the contract to be cheaper than a mobile phone network based one - especially if you want to download large files or stream video.

I hope this helps.
