I am looking to buy a light:
It has a transformer in the plug and the plug is earthed.
The cable is two core and is not earthed.
The transformer brings the voltage down from 240 to only 12 volts.
Does lower voltage reduce my exposure to EMFs?
Will the transformer lower magnetic as well as electrical frequencies?
Does it make sense to earth the cable as well as the plug – if this is possible?
Additionally, does wrapping the plug or lamp head/coil in metal foil reduce EMF emissions?

transformers generally produce pretty high magnetic and electric fields themselves. Its worth measuring the fields to see what they produce if possible, before buying. |

Lower voltage is better if one wire of the low voltage is earthed. If not, then it is not any better and the magnetic fields will be higher close to the transformer so there is no real advantage for you over a mains voltage lamp.
Wrapping anything in metal foil will not help. Earthed metal foil will reduce electric fields but not magnetic fields and you would need to be careful not to let the foil short out on any bare wires or plug prongs. |
