Buying a property near a mobile phone mast and television mast

We are interested in buying a property which is situated just outside Cardiff in St Lythans, near Wenvoe. The Wenvoe television mast and mobile phone mast are approximately 1150 metres away from the house over open country side. There is a slight ridge between the house and the masts but the top of the television mast is visible as it is very high. There is also a pylon about 700 metres from the property which is not visible as it is down in a hollow. We currently live in the centre of Cardiff and would like to know whether we would be increasing our exposure to electromagnetic fields etc by moving to this property as we want to do all we can to protect the health of our daughter. If it is not possible to assess the risk to the property from this information I was wondering whether it would be possible to purchase a survey of the property or what exquipment we should hire? Many thanks.

Hi Lisa

I'll reply on this post and get our technical web guru to remove the duplicate posts.

It's never easy to say if an area will be clear or not from EMFs in the circumstances you describe. You should not get a very high signal (if any at all) from masts over a kilometre away. However, if you are concerned at all, then I would recommend hiring instruments to measure the fields (or even buying one).

The instruments to look for on the emfields website are the:
COM (measures signal strength, in lights that light up) - to hire or buy.
A-COM (audio signal in pulsed microwave fields) - to hire or buy.
Electrosmog Dectector (basically the same as the A-COM, but is the "production" model rather than prototype so cheaper to buy, although it has the same internal circuitry).

The COM & A-COM are either £25 per week to hire individually or you can hire both for a week for £40.

The Electrosmog Detector costs £61 including VAT & postage to buy.

You may well be reducing your exposure by moving - many "outside" city locations are exposed to less than in the city itself.

Thanks very much, that is most helpful. Sorry about the duplicate posts - I think there may be an error with our computer.

Hi

A very quick note as I was in London all day today (an EMF meeting at the Royal Society) and am at Parliament tomorrow very early. It is midnight now.

The Wenvoe Tx is 500,000 watts effective radiated power which at 1150 metres is about 4 volts per metre for a clear line of sight. TV transmissions are less of a problem than phone masts , in my opinion, but that is a very high level. The pylon will not be an issue where you describe it.

However, the TV mast would put me off. I would personally wait and find another house at least 5000 metres, preferably more, from such a high powered mast. That is my personal view. I would not want to be in a background field above about 0.5 V/m and would aim to be in a field below 0.1 V/m. I would go for at least 5 miles and to a house where I could not actually see the top of the mast. Hidden by trees would be OK. Sorry to be so negative.

Thank you very much for your views. I have just read your post and we have in the meantime measured the levels at the house. The PRO meter did jump about a bit but always settled at about 0.04 for magnetic field. The COM monitor only indicated microwave radiation in 2 of the bedrooms; in one up to about 1.5 V/m, and in the other up to 3 near the ceiling. The electrosmog detector was silent in some rooms but was very noisy in the aformentioned bedrooms. In the garden the COM monitor went up to 1.5 in places but was clear behind trees. The electrosmog detector seemed to be picking up microwaves even at 2-3 km from the television mast, as you suggest. Am I correct in understanding that mobile phone mast radiation would not reach the house at 1150 metres because it falls to the floor whereas from a television mast it eminates horizontally? Are the microwaves from a television mast potentially less damaging because they are of a lower frequency?
I suspect that it would be wise for us to look for a different house, but if we were to purchase this house would planting a row of trees between the house and the mast, painting the side of the house facing the mast with screening paint (and the roof) and using the appropriate nets/curtain linings adequately screen us from this radiation and eliminate all health risks?
Also would you advise against a house where the mast was not visible (either because of trees or because it is in a hollow) but which was within a 5000 metre radius of the mast?
Many thanks for your assistance.

A hollow would be good. Also hidden by THICK band of trees would be quite good.
