Screened Cable

With regards to rewiring using screened cable:

1. If screened cable is used, would it still make a matter whether the electrician installs a normal loop or folded loop system?

2. I had trouble locating sellers of the multi- and fire resistant cables you suggested but located another type of screened cable (LSZH) manufactured by Pirelli, which is also fire resistant and comes in the standard sizes, with the added benefit of the screening being in full contact with the earth wire throughout the cable. Am I right in assuming that this cable is also suitable seeing as it is screened? (you can find it from RS electronics).

3. Finally, since the screen on this wire is in contact with the earth conductor, would it still be necessary to physically terminate it with the Earth conductor whereever a connection is made? (domestic electricians are not fully familiar with this type of cable).

Many thanks.

1. The new SAGE recommendation is that radial final circuits are used and not "ring" final circuits. You can freely download the first SAGE Report (one PDF) and the supporting papers (all in one PDF, but S9 & S10 are House wiring) from this page:
http://www.rkpartnership.co.uk/sage/

If you really want to use a "ring" circuit, then it should be "folded".

2. The Prysmian (ex Pyrelli) cable seems excellent, especially as it has XPLE and not PVC insulation. The RS site says it is Afumex LSX - I could not see the LSZH label, although LSX is Low Smoke Halogen Free (LSZH) cable. You should not use CY type flex cables fro house wiring installations, but proper installation cables such as the RS 468-1962 (2.5mm2) or 468-1990 (1.5mm2).

3. With the LSX cable, you should cut the alluminium foil back with the outer insulation and then just use the supplied Earth conductor as per normal PVC wiring cable (it will need green/yellow insulating sleeving, as normal, over the exposed tail).

Thank you for raising these helpful questions. I will add the LSX cable to our recommended list. The Tratos Fire-Safe TW950 cable is significantly cheaper and they will supply the public directly with next-day delivery. I will post their details here in the next few hours (27 June 2007).
