We are considering buying a house with three phone masts close by - please could you advise wether you think they are a health risk. The closest is 0.5 miles away further up the slight hill the house is on, it is hidden in a band of trees. This mast is a Macrocell, 25 metres high, GSM, 1800 MHz, transmitting at 27 dBW. The other two are a mile away, they are also surrounded by trees. One is Macrocell, 14.5 meters high, frequency range - 400 MHz, transmitter power 22 dBW, transmission type - TETRA. The other is Macrocell again - 16.5 meters high, frequency range 900 MHz, transmitter power - 18.5 dBW, transmission type GSM. Thank you very much for your help, we really appreciate it!

I live 500 meters away from a mobile phone mast and it is making my life hell. I suffer from microwave sickness and I feel sick when out in my garden and loud tinintus inside my house.

I thought 500 meters would be far enough away to have no effect but I am ill from the microwaves. If I could afford to move I would do. You have the chance to buy somewhere don't buy any property that is in direct line of sight of a mast and within 1km I would say.

Sorry about the delay in replying. Weety has a good point - remember he is sensitive to these fields - and for sensitive people the distance may well need to be several km.

One problem if you go too far away, can be that a new mast may be put very close to you in order to fill in the gap! I would have thought that a mile (about 1500 metres) would be OK for most people but not for sensitive people without expensive RF screening being added to your house. Is the top of the mast where the antennas are hidden from sight from your prospective new house by the trees? I would have thought not. It is the antennas that mast, not the mast structure.

27 dBW x 6 channels would result in about 0.3 to 0.4 V/m at 750 metres distance when call trafic is busy. It take 3 km for it to fall below about 0.1 V/m. many sensitive people react above about 0.05 V/m. So, ideally you should be looking for at least 3 km (about 2 miles) from the nearest mast if you are concerned. Sorry - that is not what you probably want to hear.
