Hoovers

Hi,
I'm very ES. I have had my house rewired in screen cable which really helps. But i'd like to be able to do the hoovering.

I've made extension leads out of screened cable and also rewired table lamps with screened cable with great success.

However, i am a bit worried about rewiring a hoover. I have a canister vacuum with a long hose, but it is currently wired in 2-core cable. If I rewired it in screened 3-core cable, to what do i attach the earth wire and drain wire at the hoover end? One would also need to surround the motor in some form of earthed shielding.

Can anyone help?

Many Thanks

The motor in any vacuum clear always gives off high magnetic fields when in use. I would have thought that that would be a much greater problem than the electric fields from the cable.

It is usually possible to replace the cable in a hoover or other vacuum cleaner - unless it is coiled up inside on a spring drum. Shielded cable is usually too stiff for that to work properly. Otherwise, as long as the cable is rated to carry enough current - probably at least 10 amps, then replacing it should not cause any problems.

It is VERY difficult to shield the motor. The best thing would probably be to purchase another cleaner hose that can fit on the end of the existing hosepipe and then just keep the vacuum cleaner as far away as possible from where you are cleaning and turn it on and off by switching the power at the wall or at your extension lead so that you do not have to stand next to the motor when it is switched on/off or operating. That should work well, I believe. Good luck!

Dear Powerwatch
Thanks for the info on longer tubes for hoovers.
However I definitely DO react to EMR from electric cables, so i want to replace the cable.

Please can you help with my orginal question.
When replacing a 2 - core cable with shielded 3 core cable, to WHAT does one attach the third wire (i.e the earth wire) at the hoover end. I know where to attach it at the plug end.

Do i just leave it hanging free?

This must be a standard question in relation to any replacement of 2-core cable with 3-core.

Many Thanks
Gerry

Yes, just cut it off and tape it over or otherwise make sure it can not short on anything at the hoover end. The screen and third wire just need connecting to Earth and the mains plug. That will shield the cable properly.
