We are hoping to move house, and I took the MW1 electrosmog detector with me to look round a house. The house is detached, but there is only a path about 3 feet wide between the house for sale and the house next door, and the house next door extends outwards adjacent to the garden of the house for sale.
I can hear the neighbour's DECT cordless phone on the MW1, however given the experience I have had in blocking out noise in the house we live in now, I think it will be possible to block the DECT phone microwaves in the new house, with paint etc.
However, I know that the neighbour also has Wifi, but this does not register on the MW1 at all. I am hoping to make an educated guess about whether I will be able to make the house safe from both DECT and Wifi, or if the Wifi might be more of a problem, or a problem we can't fix.
Please can you tell me if the Wifi signals are likely to be stronger than the DECT cordless phone signals, or harder to block out with painting the walls/putting bobinet curtain at the windows? I know that every situation is different, but even a broad comparison between the relative strengths of DECT and Wifi - and the ability to block them - would be of help.
(On a less important point than the house itself, if a Wifi computer is positioned in a window overlooking the garden, would we be able to make a safe place to sit by painting a gazebo with screening paint - or, without the protection of brick/block house walls, would this be an impossible task?)
Many thanks. |

DECT signals are almost always a lot stronger and more continuous than WiFi signals. Also WiFi signals are not very 'active' (i.e. they have lots of gaps in them) unless someone is downloading very large files or a video stream. So, from that point of view they are also less of a problem.
You will never manage to find a house which will not be luikely to have DECT and WiFi around it from outside. This one seems as OK as any will be. You could also try offering the neighbour a free Orchid DECT phone (which switch off when not actually carrying a telephone call) and some dLAN house-wiring network ports in place of their WiFi. That might be cost-effective re. paint and curtains.
WiFi signals generally fall off very quickly and I would have thought it unlikely that your garden would be significantly affected. Probably the best material to used for RF shielding in the garden is 6mm (hole size) weldmesh wire grid netting available from most garden centres, B&Q, etc. in 1 metre wide and 5, 10, or more, metres long rolls.
